BREAKING: MESSI TO MISS TONIGHT'S HAMBURG GAME

Unfortunately it appears that Lionel Messi will not take part in tonight's pre-season friendly match with Hamburg after an ultrasound uncovered a bruised right calf.

Messi will of course undergo therapy in an attempt to restore his fitness ahead of Barcelona's pre-season campaign.

It's expected that Chilean Alexis Sanchez will be Barcelona's most advanced striker tonight.

BARCELONA 5 GRANADA 3 - CONGRATULATIONS MESSI!

03/20/12

Barcelona tonight defeated Granada by five goals to three but the story of the night belongs to Lionel Messi who broke Cesar's record with another hat-trick.

Messi was only a goal behind Cesar Rodriguez's all-time club record of 232 goals prior to the game and tonight he scored another breathtaking hat-trick to take his goal tally to 234 club goals and 34 league goals so far this season. It was a marvelous night for the Argentine genius.

Xavi gave Barcelona the lead after just four minutes. Cuenca's cross was met by the head of Messi who guided the ball into Xavi's path. The Catalan maestro volleyed first time into the corner to send the home crowd delirious.

Messi got the goal soon after that would take him level with Cesar as Barcelona's record goalscorer. Again it was Cuenca who delivered a good cross and Messi met it with a half-volley to send the ball low into the net off the post. It was incredible technique and a very difficult skill to execute.

Granada gave Barcelona a scare in the second period. They got a goal back through the head of Mainz in the 55th minute and then struck level after Alves conceded a penalty. Siqueira made no mistake from the penalty spot to put the score level.

Messi then got his second of the night in the 67th minute and the goal that makes him Barcelona's new record goalscorer. Alves' lofted pass was timed perfectly to send Messi through. He took a quick touch and lobbed the goalkeeper in a way only Messi can do.

Tello then scored in the 82nd minute to make it 4-2 after Messi's shot had been saved. Tello's reaction to the follow up was terrific and struck a low shot into the corner with incredible technique.

Barcelona got their fifth and Lionel Messi got his hat-trick in the 86th minute. Alves again played a telepathic through-ball to Messi who rounded the goalkeeper and sent the ball into the roof of the net.

Granada scored another penalty in the dying minutes through Siqueira to make it 5-3, once again Alves conceding for a handball. Alves was shown the red card to give the game a bitter-sweet feeling.

The night of course belonged to Lionel Messi, the new record scorer of FC Barcelona. Messi now has 234 goals for the club and an astonishing 34 league goals, 2 ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. It is the 18th match in which Messi has scored at least 3 goals for Barcelona; 15 times a hat-trick, twice four goals and once five goals.

Congratulations to Messi! Felicidades Leo!

MESSI IS JUST ONE GOAL AWAY FROM CESAR RECORD

03/19/12
According to FCBarcelona.com, Lionel Messi is only just a goal away from equaling Cesar Rodriguez's club record for goals scored.

FC Barcelona’s Center of Documentation and Studies launched an investigation into the history of Cesar Rodriguez during the 1950s and determined that he actually scored 232 goals in official matches for the Blaugrana.

Messi, now on 231 club goals, could equal or even surpass Cesar's club record on Saturday when Barcelona entertain Granada.

The absolute record goalscorer for Barcelona is Paulino Alcantara who scored an astonishing 369 goals in 357 competitive and friendly matches, however Messi will surely surpass the competitive goal record set by Cesar very soon.

Sevilla 0 Barcelona 2 - Messi genius evident - 03/17/12

 03/17/12

Barcelona produced another solid performance as they strode to a 2-0 victory in Seville after fantastic goals by Xavi and Lionel Messi.

It was their maestro Xavi who opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a technically-sound free-kick which gave Palop no chance in the Sevilla goal.

Messi doubled the advantage for Barcelona just 7 minutes later. He exchanged passes with Iniesta, took the ball through a defender's legs and lobbed the goalkeeper in typically delicate fashion. It was another moment of genius from Barcelona's magician Messi.

The second half was less spectacular and was littered with mistakes from both sides. Messi had another goal ruled out but Barcelona will be satisfied with the result.

The Blaugrana have now cut the deficit at the top of La Liga to seven points, although Real Madrid take on Malaga tomorrow.

Leo Messi has now scored 31 league goals this season and has 231 goals in total for Barcelona, just four behind Cesar Rodriguez.

CRISTIANO RONALDO: I'M HAPPY FOR MESSI

Cristiano Ronaldo is the latest and quite possibly most surprising player to speak on the recent remarkable achievements of world's best Lionel Messi.

Ahead of Real Madrid's Champions League game against CSKA Moscow, Ronaldo paid tribute to Messi's accomplishment of scoring five goals in a single game last week.

Ronaldo said, "I'm happy for Messi, I'm happy for football.

"I'm not sure if I'm capable of one day scoring five goals. I hope I can."

Jose Mourinho, coach of Real Madrid, was also forthcoming in his praise for the Argentine wizard, "To score five goals is never easy. It was a nice night for him."

LIONEL MESSI BIOGRAPHY

Summary

Lionel 'Leo' Messi was born on the 24th June 1987 and is an Argentine football player who currently plays for FC Barcelona in Spain. Messi is the captain of his national team, Argentina, and plays predominantly as a forward.

Messi's style of play has been likened to Diego Maradona, who is regarded as one of the best players of all time, however Messi is on the way to becoming arguably even greater than his compatriot. Maradona even declared Messi as his 'successor' in 2006 and the young Argentine has reaffirmed this early forecast by reaching the summit of world football.

Messi has already received two Ballon d'Or awards (2009 and 2010) and is in-line to receive his third consecutive, a feat only achieved before by Michele Platini.

Leo was recognized playing football to a high level at a young age, his talents obvious to those around him. He was always regarded as one of the most skillful and effective players during his youth, but there were concerns about his height and physicality. Playing for Newell's Old Boys in Rosario, Argentina, Messi was snapped up by Barcelona in 2000 who offered to pay for the growth hormone treatment he would need to advance in his career. Newell's could not afford the treatment, so Leo's family agreed that a move to Europe was the best decision for the youngster's promising career.

Messi excelled for the Barcelona youth team and made his breakthrough to the first team in the 2004-2005 season. Messi was the club's youngest ever scorer in that season and he went on to win a La Liga and Champions League double in 2006, despite not featuring in the final against Arsenal.

The 2006-2007 season was when Messi cemented his place in the first team, one of his most memorable matches was his incredible hat-trick against arch rivals Real Madrid.

Messi had a phenomenal season in 2008-2009, leading his club to an unprecedented treble, one of the greatest moments in the club's history, notching 38 goals. Messi surpassed that mark the following season with 47 goals, equal to legend Ronaldo in the late 90s. Messi's performance in 2010-2011 was even better, scoring 53 goals, the same tally as Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

So far, Messi has accumulated 5 La Liga titles and 3 Champions League titles, his most significant accolades (as a team) for the club. Messi was also notably the top scorer in the 2010-2011 Champions League season, which was the third time in a row he has been the competition's top scorer.

At International level, Messi came to the fore at the 2005 Fifa Youth World Championship where he emerged as a phenomenon. He scored five goals in the tournament and soon after broke into the senior team. In 2006 he had made the first team and picked up a runners-up medal at the 2007 Copa America tournament. Messi won the gold medal for Argentina at the 2008 Olympics and was the tournament's stand-out player. To date, Messi has scored 18 goals in 64 games for his country.
